Ethiopian themed Iftar at Gursha

A new authentic Ethiopian restaurant that is very promising. This is Gursha’s first year presenting an Iftar to customers. It’s simple and hearty, maybe not to everyone’s taste as some items are quite tangy and some relatively bland. Either way it is definitely something to consider if you want to try something different (whether during Ramadan or any other time really). Traditionally, the style of eating is with one’s hands so don’t be shy about doing so.

Location: Club Vista Mare on Palm Jumeirah.

The Food

A rustic buffet consisting of dried fruits, nuts and dates to start you off. Fried items such as samosas and spring rolls, all with delicious fillings of vegetables, cheese and meats and fried until crispy along with avocado and labneh dips. Hearty soups such as lentil and lamb which had earthy flavours. Along with rice pilaf with carrots, roasted chicken which had a nice marination and misir wot which is a traditional spicy lentils dish. There were also breads including buticha bites and the traditional injera which is a gluten free, flat, tangy, soft bread.

The Drinks

Mocktails can be ordered separately from their existing menu. We tried their virgin mojito which was very refreshing. Could have been muddled a bit more perhaps as the citrus and mint was not as prominent as it could be.

Ambience

Great space with a tall ceiling with hanging handcrafted Ethiopian carpets, warm colors of brown and beige throughout the restaurant, with a bar on one end, a platform on one side with tables. Nothing specific to Ramadan.

How to get there

Gursha is located in Club Vista Mare, which is on the stem of Palm Jumeirah. The entrance to Club Vista Mare is easy to miss, especially at night because the entrance board is not lit and very dark. Your best option is to use Google Maps or some form of GPS in your phone or car.

Public Transport: You have the option to take a metro+tram to a close by station and then take a taxi, but there is no specific way to get to Gursha purely on public transport.

By Car: To get to Gursha by car you have to drive to the Palm Jumeirah, go over one flyover, then take the service lane. You will pass Milk and Honey Gourmet, the entrance to Club Vista Mare is after Asya’s Nursery. On the right you will find a sign for Club Vista Mare. Take a right at the sign board, you will head into the parking lot. You should see the Gursha signage at the back of the restaurant which is on the extreme right side.
