French Cafe Iftar at Pomme De pain – Ramadan 2018

Pomme De pain, the French cafe in City Walk 2, has a simple menu offered this Ramadan with a combination of Arabic dishes as well as continental cuisine with some French flair sprinkled in.

The food

They have a set menu with an appetizer sampler of popular Arabic cold and hot mezze and a choice of soups. Mains can be selected from either grilled chicken with vegetables, mashed potato and mushroom sauce, beef tenderloin with vegetables, mashed potato and mushroom sauce or penne arrabiata.

The appetizer plate comes with a little bit of everything: hummus, spring roll, kibbeh, salad. It’s small portions of each so it’s enough to taste but won’t fill you up right at the start of the meal which is how it should be. We tried both soups on the menu, the harira soup with garlic croutons was not as flavoursome as expected. The other was a lentil soup, add a squeeze of lemon to this and it’s definitely the winner of the two.

For mains, we tried the chicken with steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes and a creamy mushroom sauce. The dish was nice and well cooked and definitely a healthier option than most iftar mains. We were a bit disappointed with the sauce though albeit flavoursome it was too thin in consistency. We also had the penne arrabiata. Although al dente and doused in just the right amount of sauce, it was listed on the menu as spicy which it wasn’t at all unfortunately.

The desserts

We tried individually baked umm ali and a date mohalabiya tart, however the desserts will differ from what’s on the current iftar menu. The mohalabiya tart was delicious. The tart shell had a good texture and the mohalabiya ‘custard’ was delcious. Topped with dates and drizzled with simple syrup, we really enjoyed this dessert.

The drinks

The tables all had a large bottle of water. There were juices as well including the popular ones that are had during this time, Qamar El Din and Tamer Hindi which was perfectly sweet and delicious, as well as laban and Jallab. Tea and coffee is also offered after your meal.
Ambiance: There isn’t really anything special in terms of a Ramadan theme, they’ve kept the decor as is. Sitting outside in the glass covered section gives the feel of being outdoors without having to deal with the warm weather so that was quite nice.
